Description

Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for a Secondary Instructional Literacy Coach.   Under the direction of the Supervisor of Reading / Language Arts and Gifted & Talented Education K-12, the Secondary Instructional Literacy Coach implements comprehensive, school-based staff development and provides support to staff members at designated middle and high schools. The Secondary Instructional Literacy Coach also collaborates with all district stakeholders to enhance the opportunity for all students to be successful.

 

DUTIES:

  • Work with all stakeholders in the area of interdisciplinary literacy in order to improve students’ reading, writing, and communication skills;
  • Plan and provide high quality staff development as outlined in the Maryland Professional Development Standards and provide written records of the same;
  • Coach and provide feedback to teachers on instruction related to literacy development and content area knowledge;
  • Facilitate the development of a comprehensive assessment program that uses a range of assessment tools including both formative and summative assessments;
  • Function as a facilitator in the collaborative planning process to analyze student work and monitor progress;
  • Analyze and interpret data from local and State assessments to assess student needs and progress;
  • Collaborate with other coaches and the Supervisor of English to implement district-wide literacy improvements;
  • Ensure that instruction and curriculum are aligned with Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards;
  • Serve on building- and district-level committees;
  • Provide ongoing mentoring and support for teachers;
  • Work with teachers individually and collaboratively to provide support on the full range  of reading, writing, and communication strategies;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has obtained, or is eligible for, a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate, required;
  • Minimum of five years recent satisfactory experience teaching English in grades 6-12;
  • Has obtained a Master’s Degree; preferred;
  • Experience as a trainer for staff development to teachers with proven knowledge of current research and best practices in secondary reading instruction, writing instruction, and disciplinary literacy;
  • Proficiency in utilizing data discussion protocols;
  • Technology skills; including the ability to learn new software applications.
